- Justin Metcalf World Barista Judge ™is one of Australia’s most recognized Coffee & Café consultants. His business, Espresso Essentials was developed to provide café training and to promote the specialty coffee industry in Australia and throughout the world.
- Concentrating initially on perfecting the skills of the Barista, Justin’s passion then led to an active involvement in the speciality roasting industry, where he has established a reputation as a Master Roaster.
- Justin began his Barista Judging career nationally in 2000. He first represented Australia in Oslo, Norway in 2002 at the World Barista Championship. In 2004 the World Barista Committee certified Justin as a WBC International Judge in Trieste, Italy. This was followed up with the honour of his selection to judge the final of the 2004 World Barista Championships.
- In 2005, Justin became the first Australian to be Head Judge of the World Barista Final in Seattle, USA.
- The following year 2006, he was again Head Judge of the World Barista Championships in Berne, Switzerland.
- Justin has also judged in Australia, New Zealand, USA, Mexico, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Europe and Scandinavia.
- More recently he was appointed Chairman and one of the three international experts to the prestigious WBC Judge and Certification Committee.
- Further to this, Justin put his own coffee skills to the test with a last minute decision to compete for Australia in the first World Latte Art Championship in Singapore. With over 20 countries competing Justin was awarded a very respectable Third Place.
- As Principal Trainer for Espresso Essentials, Justin has developed an ongoing series of coffee workshops for retailers and to all the other striving coffee professionals. All the Espresso Essentials Trainers have extensive industry experience and certification in Assessment and Workplace Training which enables the delivery of a range of Nationally Accredited courses and qualifications. Espresso Essentials is able to provide training and consultancy in the establishment and operation of a café, Roaster training and techniques, and basic to advanced Barista certification.
- Justin’s high profile throughout the Coffee Industry has led to the establishment and development of his own signature coffees distributed by Coles Supermarket throughout all of Australia. He is currently supplying to over 600 stores nationally. He is the only Australian specialty coffee identity to have his face and name attached to coffee in this type of environment.
